Firefox obviously has update pings, but it also has something called Remote Settings which is a tool to sync data to your browser for lots of other useful things. You phone home to get this data. Overall it's stuff like graphics driver blocklists, addon blocklists, certificate blocklists, data for CRLite, exemptions to tracking protection to unbreak sites, and so on.
